“The Man in a Case,” originally written by Anton Chekhov and translated into English by Wendy Wasserstein, follows an uptight language professor who starts learning to relax with the help of his fiancee, Varinka. This ultimately culminates in a choice that Byelinkov must make: hold on to his old rigid life or let go and live more freely with Varinka.

Uptight, strict, ordered professor who’s more relaxed, wild fiancée pushed him to question his life of organized rules. He embraces this new life by the end of the play, recovering a letter his fiancée wrote him after initially tearing it up.
